Not an expert yadda yadda, but a tranny shop owner who was a friend of my ex boss told me to choose a cooler that wasn't too big. He said figure out how heavy the truck is, plus load plus anything you might concievably tow and then choose a filter for that. Or to keep it simple choose a cooler that is near or bigger than the GCWR, gross combined weight rating. This is for most normal climates. If you live in really hot country you might go the next step bigger. If you live in really cold country you might go a step smaller.
A tranny does like to be at a certain operating temp for best operation. Too cold and it may shift harder or delay shifting. Too hot is worse tho.
I have read that the flat plate designs are more efficient and smaller for same performance. The old tube stlye coolers are still OK but they are larger.
Be sure to mount it where it will get good airflow and still be protected from rocks and stuff.
Jim, what do you mean by "flat plate design"? I have seen two types, your typical tube/radiator style, and a long straight cylindrical tube with some cooling fins running the length. Is that second one a flat plate or is it something different? I kinda like the long tube with the fins as it's smaller and easier to tuck away. I don't know if it's as efficient though.
John
The flat plat coolers look kinda honey comb pattern and are made up of flat plates stacked together. I haven't looked at one for awhile but you can probably get a description and picture of one on the JC Whitney website or elsewhere, maybe permacool, hayes etc.
The flat plate designs are supposed to be more efficient in getting rid of the heat. The old style tube designs are usually much larger for the same amount of cooling. The disadvantage is they are more expensive.
I think the average owner won't be able to tell the difference other than size.
I have the plate style from B&M on my Cougar. (would put one on the truck but it's a 5spd). I like the kit, the only thing I needed was some extra hose.
