Brake problems 1996 explorer

I suddenly have no brake pedal on my Explorer. The brakes were working fine until yesterday, and suddenly there is no pedal. It will pump up but then goes right back down. Could this be a master cylinder problem or is it possible it just needs pads? The fluid is full and there are no apparent leaks of fluid anywhere.

For the brakes to suddenly go away and have no pedal after they pump up almost sounds like a master cylinder issue of some sort. Might be worth it just to check the pads and see where they are, but I don't think that would be the problem - pad wear would not be a "sudden" loss of braking, it would occur over time. Just my 2 cents.

Make sure that the master cylinder is full, and isn't leaking any fluid at all. A minor leak could result in the pedal going to the floor yet wouldn't empty out the MC right away. If you are sure it isn't a fluid leak, then it will probably be either a bad master cylinder or booster.
