Cooling System

Hi all, <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

I just bought a 1985 F250 Xl with a 460, I am having a little trouble with heating. I can run at 55mph and the temp stays in the normal, but as soon as I build up speed my temp goes up. I am pretty sure it’s the thermostat and the water pump. I am going to be putting in a new radiator and water pump this weekend, any advice? This is the firs Ford i have owned and i love it so far! I just want to make sure i am not overlooking anything. I would love as much information on an 85 F250 XL 7.5L Gas as possible. Thanks and have a great one! <o></o>

My money is on the radiator, the fan clutch wont affect the truck much at highway speeds. I chased a overheating at speed problem on my truck for a year, replaced water pump, t stat, fan clutch hoses and it turned out to be the radiator. The old one spring a leak on me one day so i replaced it withe the big 2 row one and it has been fine ever since.

thats actually a misconseption of the clutch. if the clutch is locking up then it wont overheat going down the road but if the clutch is slipping then it will. if you are not noticing a leak from the radiator then the chances of it being the radiator are slim. thermostat is very common and on a ford make sure to use the oem replacement temp or they will also over heat and it could even be air bubbles in the radiator

GREAT!! Information, I did make sure the thermostat was the stock operating temp.I am about 95% sure that the water pump and the thermostat would help a lot. I will leave some info after this weekend. Thanks all have a great 3day!

If a previous owner added a bit too much stop leak, you will not notice any radiator leaks, and you will not notice much cooling either. Corrosion from bad maintence of the cooling system can also plug a radiator and cause over heating.
My experience has been that if the overheating is from high speed driving, it is usually the radiator. A bad water pump, or thermostat will let it overheat at any speed, and usually real quickly if it is the thermostat. At speeds over 40, you can take the fan off and throw it away. The air flow thru the grill is enough to cool a good radiator.
Good Luck Frank

I just got my truck back, WOW whole new truck, the radiator was shot, and the water pump was not spinning properly. The truck feels like it has so much more power! Thanks for the info. <o></o>
