Premium Sound

I am plan on installing a double din DVD player in my 02 Expy which as the premium sound. Can I just install the DVD player to the factory harness. Or do I have to disable the factory amplifiers also.

Unless you have a factory subwoofer, then you most likely don't have any amps to bypass. Metra does show a 70-5517 adapter which is the 16pin plus an amp plug, so I suspect you have a factory sub but not mid/high amps. So yes you need this kind of adapter (I just like metra, as they have a dist point locally and I attended one of their schools) to keep the factory sub/amp working with any aftermarket head unit.

If you don't have the second little harness, the factory amp will not turn on and the sub will not fire. The door speakers should work fine. At least on my 02 superduty, the premium speakers are just a lower ohm and better quality than the standard speakers, no external amplifier is used for the doors.

asked the same question to metra but mine is an 06 with factory sub. here is the response. Not sure if the second part would be needed I believe it was reax that told me you could use a resistor on the remote turn-on wire. by the way I am not promoting this site - they just appeared to have the answers I needed and prompt responses

I am installing a double din deck into a 2006 eddie bauer expedition with the factory sub. I am aware that I will need 95-5026 for the deck. Will I need both 70-5520 & 70-5521 or just 70-5521 as the harness. All factory speakers will remain for now. Also any notes you may have would be appreciated (I have heard of a turn on pop with aftermarket head units). Please advise.

Thank you,
Mike
