lookin for first EX

I'm lookin at gettin a larger family truck. We currently travel in a 97 Grand Cherokee 4x4 4.0 auto with a 4in lift, 32's and 4.10 gears. On the highway we get around 17.5 according to info display all the while goin 75-80. City it does around 13-14.

SO,...... what set up of an excursion would be compairable? Ideally I'd like the same or better mpg, and preferably 4x4.

I am a new X owner (2001 4x2 7.3L LTD) and I am getting 24mpg on the highway. While driving around town I am getting 15. Towing my boat (10,000+) I got 13 on the highway yesterday.

I really can't speak to the 4x4 and tire setup since I don't know much, but my mileage is accurate. Good luck!

A diesel Excursion is definitely in your future. You have two options: the 7.3 or the 6.0 diesel.

The 7.3 is a more proven engine with a few more years behind it than the 6.0. The 6.0 had it's fair share of teething problems but is also a great enigine.

Both can deliver power, fuel economy, and longevity if properly cared for. There are mods and upgrades that get more than get you the power and fuel economy you're looking for, it's just a matter of what you budget is.

I don't believe your highway mileage, unless you're cruising at 45.

I am going by the on-board Ford console computer. I have stock tires so I would imagine it's accurate. I will snap a pic today and post.

That computer is commonly called the "lie-o-meter." Check it by calculating your mileage between fillups: miles traveled / gallons to full.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong please. The "lie-o-meter" calculates your overall gas mileage, not a tank to tank calculation. Right now my "lie-o-meter" says 8.0 mpg. If my Excursion has used 6,000 gallons of gas since new, it's gotten 8 miles per gallon "average" during the use of this 6,000 gallons.

If I reset the "lie-o-meter" to zero at fillup, it only takes a few miles before it goes right back to 8 mile per gallons, the overall average for the life of the Excursion? Right????

My Ex's mainframe says that I get 14 mpg no matter what - whether I am traveling the interstate, or fleeing the local PD like a BOOH!!

Those mainframes in the Ex's were programmed by cross-eyed squirrel monkeys!!

I have an app on my iphone called 'Gas Cubby'. It keeps track of all maintenance, mileage, documentation, etc., etc., and provides mileage to the thousandths. That is the way to go - or use a little solar power calculator!!

If that is the case, I am doing pretty good with 14 mpg's!! And if what you say is true, then the only real way to reset the mainframe is to take the odometer back to zero also!

No, it's an average from the last time it was reset.

Do you not ever reset the mpg meter?

I remember I was going down a mountain pass up in GA and just coasting at 70. I hit the reset on the meter and it said about 40 MPG. I should have taken a photo of it. :-)

If you reset the lie-o-meter right after you fuel up and run it for the whole tank the lie-o-meter is always within 1 mpg of hand figured om my Ex. If you do not reset it at a fill up then it tends to be more off!! Oh and I consistently run 20 mpgs at 75 mph on the interstate with my 6.0 diesel. I did see 21 once........ I run 17.5 hand figured in town driving it very easy...... Get a diesel if you buy an Excursion.......prices are good don't settle on the gassers.....

+1

If you reset it, it's going to read the average since it was last reset.
