Winch Confusion!

Hello all, I have a winch issue I would like some input on. I am placing a 10k military pto winch on my truck (79 f250) the winch will run off of a pto unit mounted on the transfer case(np205). My dilemma is that the unit I have runs opposite of crank direction. While in reverse, that means the winch will be spooling out instead of in. I can simply reroute the cable to go under the drum, but running in this direction will be powering "through" the load brake on the winch, therefore requiring removal of the brake. Now, I was wondering how important it is to have the wheels turning while winching? Meaning could I just put the transer case in neutral, and not run the winch in reverse, but if I am stuck I would not have the help of the wheels to extract? Lastly, I really do not want to lose the brake, as I will also be using the winch for some light logging, then just using truck power to pulls logs once they are free...sorry if this is confusing also...thanks!!!

p.s. I could get a pto unit the rotates in the same direction, but then I will only have one winch speed, compared to 4 if i use foward gears(not that important though).....thanks again!!
