91' F250 shifts hard after going over 50 MPH

I have a 1991 F250, automatic, with a 460 motor. If i go over 50 MPH the truck shifts hard from 1st to 2nd & 2nd to 3rd. But after a couple days of driving slow, the truck shifts fine again.!?!? It's really weird. What could be the problem? I heard that it could be the "kickdown cable" sticking & may need a new one; but i could not find one online or in-town for sale? Can anyone help?

Do you have overdrive button on the dash, to the right of your steering column? If not, then you likely have the C6 trans, in which case you can disconnect it from bot the trans and the throttle body, and see if it makes any difference. Beware though that with said cable disconnected if you stomp on throttle to pass someone on the freeway the trans will not downshift by itself, or it will take its sweet time, so you will need to manually drop her a gear (if appropriate at all) before you put the hammer down.

Then you don`t have a kickdown cable. A first step might be to pull the codes and see if anything shows up. If you don`t have an OBD1 code reader you can go to fordfuelinjection.com for instructions on accessing them without one.
