Talking SHE RUNS!!! w/ pics!!

***WARNING*** - this is long.

Well, Betty Big Hips is moving under her own power.

So to catch everyone up to speed, I pulled the motor out of a wrecked 2000 that had forged rods and 87,000 miles. It was to be put into my 02 at some point to replace the PMR motor with 107K for the sole purpose of getting a stronger motor for future higher horsepower goals (Something 400hp or more). Wasn't planning on doing it right away but it just happened that way.

Started the teardown of the other truck over a month ago. You can find the parts that are still available in the classifieds. A HUGE thanks goes out to Kris for talking me thru pulling a motor over the phone! Decided to install some headstuds, not because I was going to be needing them, but as a "why the hell not when I've got full access to the top of the motor." Scott (cookie88) is the man to thank there cause I was on the phone with him several times with the studs. Installed new glowplugs while I was at it. I had the forged motor all ready to go before I even pulled the dually in the shop.

It's a good thing I decided to do this when I did cause the day before starting on the dually, my SES light came on and it was running like crap. Classic UVCH separating symptoms. That motor came out, swapped all the parts around on the motors: fuel systems, turbo, pedestal, up-pipes, wiring, etc and within hours I was ready to reinstall. Big thanks to Peter (Duck Fan) for sending his spare up-pipe collector to put the factory up-pipes back on the original motor. I also pulled the VCs and installed the retainer clips so that it wouldn't happen again. The forged motor had already been updated with new harnesses.

Reinstall when very well except for chipping a corner of the fan on the cherry picker arm. So after all of the swapping, I had to change the fans around too! Got it all back together on Saturday, filled with new oil, installed the DS coolant kit, and topped off with Cat ELC.

The startup was not near as monumental as I'd hoped for. The first hit of the key and the motor turns over about 1/2 and just stops I'm thinking "OH HELL" it's hydrolocked and I just screwed this thing up royally!!! Like a retard, I try again. This time in spins 2 or 3 times and stops. I'm about to by this time. So I put it in neutral and push it out of the shop by myself cause I wanted it outside just in case it went caput. **Let me tell ya, that's not an easy chore alone!!** Again nothing. Then I look at my voltmeter and I don't have enough juice to really fire the injectors. Hook it up to the charger and go back and check every 30 minutes. Spins fast and strong but no start. Finally after a few more hours of this I give up. Mainly cause it's 3am. Get up the next morning early and still no start. Then as I'm ramming my head against the steering wheel I hit the key and it FIRES!!! Spits, sputters, and coughs all over itself then starts to smooth out. It in no way sounds good, but it's running. I'm crawling all around it checking for leaks and there's none.

So I let it idle for a while so I can get cleaned up and catch the horses. You see, I needed it running cause I had to get the horses to the horseshoer by 10am Sunday. By the time it finally started it was 8:45 . Called and thank GOD, bought myself another hour. Come back out of the house and see this coming from the downpipe.

BTW, this is the stock 3" downpipe cause someone (cough*Pat*cough) is getting a present from me!!! I'm running this until my other one gets here. I thought I'd got all the oil and such out before buttoning back up but I guess I didn't!

Because of my much needed farrier appointment, my test drive was done pulling the horse trailer. Kept it under 65mph and tried to keep the boost under 10psi to make sure everything was ok. It ran alright and was loud as hell with the stock dp cut off right before the trans crossmember. After 40 miles there, shut it off, checked for leaks again. Let it set for a couple of hours and it fired right away. Turned the chip up on the way home and everything is fine. HOWEVER, because I was a moron and didn't replace the lower radiator hose (even though I was going to), it's leaking slighlty. So I've got to get that replaced.

Other than that it's no different looking than my other motor, except for what's on the inside!!

You can follow the photo chronical of this adventure in my webshots albums: Strokersace's photos and albums on webshots I made a few changes to things along the way too.

More pics to come once I get some more taken.

Story as to why I'm doing this all of a sudden is below:

Great to hear you gotter runnin'. Now you either have a spare motor to mess with or sell it and regain some money back on your install.

I called BTS a month or so ago to ask some hp questions and what they recommended for injector/oil/turbo combinations. In talking to them it was asked what I was doing with some of the "extra" parts. Turns out they're willing to trade me some of their parts for some of mine. Meaning a built trans and some more towards injectors.

The deal was made and I set forth rearranging my already scheduled trip to Kansas so I could make a trip to Lead Hill the 8th and 9th of June. I figured I'm that close and this opportunity doesn't come around very often so why the hell not!! I extended my stay in Kansas so this is why I'm not heading to the RiffRaff Dyno weekend.

I'm getting a fully built transmission and a set of Hypermax Stage 2 singles w/ .008 nozzles. Why Hypermax and not Casserly you ask Yes they are going to be more expensive, but these puppies are almost brand new, I had great luck with their stage 1's in my OBS, and these are the exact same injector that Cale, Justin, and Brian all have in their personal trucks. These particular injectors actually were going to go into Brian's Excursion but he decided that he didn't want/need that much power in the Ex. I figure if they're solid enough injectors for those guys to have in their own trucks, they're good enough for me!!

I was hoping to get enough of the other parts sold to afford either a BTS or Terminator big oil system at the same time, but it's not going to happen right now. Down the road definately!! I'm also probably going to have Cale burn me some tunes when they've got the rig in their possession. That way it's 100% right before I ever leave.

In the future (if money allows) all I'll have left for power mods on this truck is big oil, a modified H2E turbo, and high performance fuel pickup and pump. Then I'll be onto my next project!

Good job, but so much for doing things the easy way. Injectors, big oil, balancer, etc. would have all been easier before the motor swap, but at least you got the headstuds & bellowed up pipes in first.

I won't even try to guess how loud that straight pipe is cut off like that.

So does this mean you'll be re-doing your live tuning, or do you have other plans first? If you're going to be doing a little bit at a time, sounds like Jody's new chip would be the way to go so you can just get updated tunes emailed to you.

Glad to help you. What probably took soo damn long to fire the truck was the fact you *probably* didnt refill the oil rails in the heads with oil once you put the injectors back in.. so, the pump had to fill it all up. Anyway, glad to see you got it running, thats one CLEAN 2000 engine, how much did that cost ya if you dont mind?

WOW! Awesome. I have to appreciate when someone can do a project like that and not break more things than they fix. I guess it comes with experience.

Nice, you'll like the hypermax stage two's. I wouldnt label them stage two's however, because they flow ALOT more than what one should.. You'll be happy with them, they will severely overpower your stock turbo, and you'll really like a modified H2 in your future. Patti's truck with that setup, and stock head BOLTS makes ~525hp.

If I knew my stock tranny would hold out to get down to BTS, then I'd have had them send me the injectors to install on the stand. Didn't want to chance it though.

I won't even try to guess how loud that straight pipe is cut off like that.

You ain't a-kiddin'!! It's so dang obnoxiously loud that with the windows up, radio off, and the earpiece on my cell turned all the way up, I could barely hear the person I was talking to!!

Well, that's still up in the air. If I'd have know that this was all going to take place back at the 1st of March, I'd have never gotten live tuned to start with. Hindsite's 20/20 and I probably should have went with the F6 instead.

I'm really thinking I might have Cale burn me a chip when I'm down there. It won't cost much more than having my DP re-burned, and I'll know it's 100% before I leave. Then hopefully I can find someone with similar modification (as of now) as mine to get the DP to.

Thanks again for all the help Kris. It was good to talk to you! I didn't fill the oil rails and I bet that's one of the things you told me to do and I didn't right it down!

The 2nd picture is of the '00 motor right after getting it out of the wrecked truck. IT WAS NASTY!! The 3rd pic is after nearly a gallon of Simple Green and a destroyed scotch brite pad. Took close to an hour of scrubbing to get it clean.

Oh you weren't in that shop when I was on the rant a time or THREE!! As for the experience, there wasn't any. It was one of those, "Well, you're already this far so there's NO turning back now!!"

That's what Cale said almost word for word. I quizzed him pretty hard if my van turbo was going to be able to handle them and he said that it should do fine for now. It was after talking to him that I decided the H2 was in the future. He said they're all running these injectors with modded H2E's and putting down close to 530hp at the rear wheels! He said they are running aftermarket headstuds. Stock springs and pushrods though.
