Air Intake Question

I have a K&N filter on my 98 EB 5.4. I cleaned it yesterday and installed it today. Before I put it in I decided to blow out the intake after the filter that goes into the fender. This is when I discovered that it just goes into to fender and ends there. I thought it ran into the front somewhere so it could suck in fresh outside air. So now I'm wondering if the short section that runs into the fender can be removed and have the intake simply suck in air directly in front of the filter housing. I don't know if there would be any benefits or dangers in doing this. If they sell cold air kits that have the filter out in the open, then I can't see any harm in it.
