I have a 92 explorer that has sat for a few months. I checked everything out and drove it for a few weeks and blew a rusted rear brake line. I fixed the line and bled everything out and now only the front brakes work. They only work if you push the pedal all the way down to the floorboard. I have also now replaced the master as I figured it must be bad as soft pedal=m/c hard pedal=booster. What am I missing here? Could it be the porportioning valve? What kind of vaccuum should I have at the booster? I do not have any wheel cylinder leaks or line leaks and the front pads are floating on the calipers good and free. I have also adjusted the rears and I still have the problems. thanks for the help
You are right in one respect, the problem is NOT the booster.
When you fitted the new master cylinder did you bench bleed it? It does sound like the system is full of air. Do you know if that model has Rear Anti-Lock Brake System? If so the RABS module needs to be bled after the rear brakes.
Ok, thanks for that bit of info. but, excuse my ingnorance where is this module located? I am assuming along the frame rail somewhere. If you could give me a general location I could check it out. Does it have a bleeder? thanks
If it has RABS the module is probably on the inside of the left frame rail. If you follow the pipe going down from the master cylinder to the rear brakes it should lead you right to it. And yes it does have a bleed screw.
It should be bled after the rear brakes and before the fronts.
Good luck.
