My Dad's 1991 F350 with the E4OD lost enough fluid to make it quit working. Has this happened before? It makes a gear grinding sound when you put it in gear. There is no noticable fluid leak under the truck but when I checked it it didn't even register on the dipstick. I also noticed that the engine vibrates more at idle than it did before. Could it be a chipped gear that has the engine slightly of balance? Thanks! Benjamin
I am not an expert but I think you have a big problem. First off where did the fluid go and why?
I would guess either the fluid slowly leaked away over time and no one noticed since they didn't check or, it was blowing out the dipstick tube because of heat. Or could just be a seal let go and dumped it while driving.
The grinding noise is not good. A tranny should never make a grinding noise. I am guessing the planetary gear set may have been damaged or perhaps there is a lot of junk in the torque converter.
Either way, sounds like at best all you can hope for is to refil with fluid and hope it goes away, not likely. Or have a shop drop the pan and diagnose the problem. I would guess you need a rebuild at least.
We pulled it to out local mechanic and he said it sounded like the torque converter gone bad. He also said that when that happened the tranny probably heated up a lot and caused the fluid to expand and leak out of the overflow. He is going to check it out and let us know. We just had it rebuilt 30000 miles ago. And I know it is too soon to need a fluid change or be causing trouble. Thanks. Benjamin
