Been a mechanic forever it seems (I'm 45) but never owned/repaired a diesel before. I bought an EX U-Haul truck just to make a trip to OK to move my girlfriends stuff back here. Then I was planning on transplanting the diesel into my 74 F250 Crewcab.
It's a 1990 F350 14ft box truck.
#1, I need help Identifying the engine. I cannot post pics here as I am too new. So pics of my engine bay won't help unless somebody wants me to email them.
#2 it developed a miss on the way back from OK. I noticed some smoke at highway speed yet did not 'feel' a drop in performance. It was only at fuel stops did I notice the miss. How do I identify faulty cylinder? Temp of the exhaust manifold? From reading these boards, should I suspect an injector?
The engine should be the 7.3IDI.
If you get the miss at idle crack open a nut on the hard fuel line at each injector in turn, the one that makes no or little difference to the engine note should be the faulty injector.
If you look down a few lines from this page you will see the Pre-power Stroke page. Some great guys on there who will be only too glad to give you any advice you need.
Good luck.
IDI stands for In-Direct Injection. The fuel charge is injected into a small pre-combustion chamber in the cylinder head before going into the cylinder. The Power Strokes are direct injection.
When you crack open an injector line a little fuel will come out under pressure but not a flood.
The IDI is a good simple engine, not too bad to service and cheap to maintain. Unlike the Power Strokes with their computers the IDI will run with only one electrical connection to the injector pump fuel shutoff solenoid. However for starting them it is vital that the glowplugs are good.
Hope this helps.
