Late last night with a load of folks in my truck I lost steering and brakes. Luckily was just backing out of the drive. Had a nice puddle of fluid in the driveway and under the truck. Was too late/dark to fully verify the problem but either I lost the PS pump it a line. Since there if fluid everywhere I'm thinking maybe just a line.
Anyone have any guesses on a) the problem and b) the effort to fix (out in the street with minimal light / tools etc) Would a bad pump spew fluid everywhere?
If it is the pump I might have it towed to a shop and just let them put a $70 NAPA on there and be done. If it is a hose I might give it a whirl myself.
There is a lot of places for a leak to happen.
The best way to find it is to simply get a couple of quarts (or more) of ATF, start the engine, pour some into the pump filler, and start looking.
My guess is that a hose split and it's pumping fluid out through there.
There's one piticular area you should look, right behind drivers side top shock mount, the hoses are very close to the mount, they are on mine and the can rub up against the top shock mount, causing a(schaffing) nick in the hose eventually with failure, check that out. If thats it, put a new line on there and get yourself a thick piece of heater hose to wrap around that hose where it comes in contact to that mount.
Mine did the same thing a month ago. Mine failed at the high pressure line fitting seal going into the ps pump. I got a new high pressure line at car quest for $32.
and if I recollect correctly: 70 dollar auto zone rebuilt pumps don't put out enough flow at pressure to brake AND turn at the same time. One or the other. I think New are about $200. these pumps fit everything FORD from focii to rangers to 26ftbobtailed 450's and you really don't want one from a focus.
you need to find the leak and fix it. not hard with mostly normal hand tools.
Mine did the exact same thing. It was the high pressure fitting at the pump. It's easiest if you remove the IC pipe, That gives you plenty of room to see and work on the problem. Cost me about $15 at NAPA in Oregon. Just remember to replace the lost fluid with ATF, not power steering fluid.
Well fellas....it was the high pressure hose at the pump. Fitting came right out of the nut. I removed the batter and the IC pipe to make it easier to get to. I would post old hose / new hose comparisons to show you the exact problem area but I guess I don't have enough posts to have attachments yet. If anyone wants I can email them or something. thanks for all of the help on this one.

Allen,
Thanks for the update.
I was adding attachments with far fewer than 343 posts.
Edit: If Megawatt Jim sees this post he will have an answer.
