3.73 w/open diff

Got my parts for vcode swap and 2inch blocks for the rear and i havent even had a chance to put them in yet and still I am already thinking of the "next" project.

I have a open diff with 3.73's. Want to upgrade, but nothing to the extreme as a locker. What are my options? Cost is a factor, like to keep the cost down. Thoughts? tks!

You should already have a 2" block in the rear.... unless you are going to stack....

As far as options for a better diff., the Tru trac is a good option...

Tru Trac Limited Slip

I had also found another less expensive brand of clutchless diff but I don't have access to my computer to pull it up. Dependability would favour the Detroit or Eaton though.

dont know much about diffs except the basics, but what one on that page would I get? About how much would it cost for an install? Do I get one for the front too?

You would need the Ford 10.25 diff for the rear and the Dana 60 for the front.

You wouldn't need one for the front unless you were doing any amount of offroading but the rear one would be highly beneficial.

Can't give an estimate on install time though, maybe someone else could chime in....

I used to have an open 3.73 rear diff also. Just had the true trac installed about a month ago. I do believe it is the sterling 10.25/10.5 rear diff, and a dana 50 up front. From the link above part #det915A550, but a call or email to them will get you the right one. (On my 2002 v-10 anyways.) I did also get new carrier bearings from ford for the install, and obviously new fluid for the diff. Install should be about 3-4 hrs. Unless you have calipers to realign axles you will want to have it installed by someone. I purchased all the parts myself and took everything in and had it installed. Price is hard to say, because in Canada we pay higher for everything. So far been good and I can feel the inside tire shimmy when taking tight curves while on the go pedal. I went with just the rear axle for now, because of only moderate off roadin.

You are correct, the Excursion has a Dana 50 up front.

Wouldn't recommend it... don't know if the clutch packs are worn out.

I would agree with Ken on this one. They replaced because it is almost worn or already worn. I would get in touch with FTEparts guy and price out a new OEM, just for comparison to see where you are at. But then again you would be getting clutch packs that wear out, compared to detroits helical gears. Just my thought.

I would expect to change the clutches anyway. Some cheap traction if the price is right.

Located a new oem one for about $350. its about 200 bucks cheaper thant the tru trac. Is there any advantage with going with the aftermarket one?

The biggest difference would be the oem will have the clutch packs compared to the helical coil on the true trac. Now how long will the oem clutch pack last before you have to replace would be pretty much speculative, but they will go and you will only have one wheel drive again, (it depends on how they are worked). The true trac in my view will last the life of the vehicle, unless you really beat on it, but then the axle will probably break before the true trac goes. You will have to weigh out if you want to replace the clutch packs in the oem, with how much they last, compared to the extra price of the true trac. The rest of the install is basically the same cost.

lifted the rear of the truck off the ground yesterday, when I spun one wheel the other turned the opposite direction. Is that not telling me that I have a LS? Maybe the previous owner installed one? thoughts?

I would have someone hold the other side to see if it has any friction when turning, as it may do that with no friction.
or
Go to a loose gravel patch or even better yet a lawn and let er rip. You will know real quick if you have more than an open diff.

Or you could open up the diff case and see. Great time to replace fluid, and even the case cover. I would probably find a soft patch somewhere to test on tho before opening the case, because you will have to reopen and spill all the oil if you then want to change anything back there. (unless you can leave the cover off while you order something, or try to recoup the oil coming out the first time you open, and reuse for the SHORT time it takes to order in)
