My first Diesel

1999 FORD F250 SUPER DUTY $5,000
1FTNF20F8XEB95962
PICKUP 7.3L V8 DIR 267.000 miles
REAR WHEEL DRIVE

So far it is running nice but it says water in fuel on the dash and the A/C goes in and out. There is also a black box with a green display that reads my RPMs and wanted to know what is. I want to take it to a diesel mechanic and have them look at it. And what kind of oil should I use?

Thanks Kurt

Welcome to FTE. Congrats on your purchase. Be sure to scroll down the forum listing a bit further and check in at our 99 - 03 7.3 diesel section. Lot's of good info about the diesel engines down there.

For your first two questions, we'll start with the WIF (water in fuel) light. Do you know where the fuel filter is? Make sure you change that every 15k miles, and it's probably a good idea to change it now since you just got the truck. On the back side of the fuel filter bowl, there's a yellow drain valve. Rotate it counter clockwise 1/4 turn and it will drain the water out of the bowl. Water will come out first, then diesel will start to come out. When diesel starts to come out, shut the lever off, then turn the key on (not start) for 20 seconds until you hear the fuel pump quit humming. Turn it off, and repeat the key on thing one more time. That's it for the WIF issue.

The box looks like the Ford AIC (auxillary idle controller). Hit the RPM control then up button a few times with the engine running while in park, and you should see the idle increase. It's mostly used with people who have a PTO shaft on the tranny to run some type of auxiliary equipment.
