Couple of questions, Where can I get the speedometer cable for this truck? Its a 302 v8 with 4 speed. I have dana 60 in the rear and a dana 44 in the front what gears are the best for off road and on? The front gears are shot so I can order new gears or should I do a axle swap? Thanks to all respond.
Most likely your truck has 4.10's in the rear. The front should be 4.09. I was never quite sure why Ford did that. The best explaination I heard was to keep the drivetrain from binding when 4x4 was used on a hard road. I have seen 4x4 trucks locked up from mismatched ratios and tires sizes to the point they had to be jacked up to free the tension. I would be inclined to stay with 4.10's since you have a 302 which by the way isn't stock.
If you're considering an axle swap a mid 77 - 79 axle would be the easiest. You would gain disc brakes along with ball joints and much stronger spindles. The spindles for the older axles are obsolete and getting hard to come by.
Hopefully Bill ( Number Dummy ) will chime in with a source for the cable.
