Hey all, im stumped, today is the first day I could look under my truck that i bought when i was in iraq. Im trying to find out the trans in it. The door sticker says the trans code is "Z" damn internet isnt giving me crap for info. Here is a few pictures, can anyone of u guys tell me what you think this is? I dont know if it is an M50D or not. Im confoozled.
There should be a tag on the case somewhere. Get the number from the tag, call a ford dealer, ask for the parts department. Tell them you want to know what trans you have and give them the number. They will be glad to look it up. If there is no trans tag and the unit is original to the vehicle, give them the VIN # instead.
this is my door tag... its my f-250. i dont understand why there is no z code. i know its a 5 spd intrical bell housing, i just want to know what it is exactly and is it strong.
hope this helps anyone. also proof that im not crazy. lol
Its a ZF the Mazda units didn't have PTO covers. Is this truck an F250/350 with at 4.9/5.0/5.8? It could also be ordred in a F150 but this was rare, but many people do the swap because the M5 is easy to break and has too high of a 1st gear if you pull anything.

Reason: spelling
If it was a ZF5 it will have an ID plate just above the drivers side PTO delete cover, or at least a place for the plate...
The ZF5 also has cross hatch ribs above the PTO delete cover surrounding the ID plate.
The area forward of the PTO delete cover is not correct for the ZF5.
The ZF5 is a Hydraulic Clutch transmission. (I can't see one, pic is dark for me though)
The fill plug area is not correct for a ZF5
The slave cylinder is internal you can see the line going into the bellhousing in the top picture that is how I knew it wasn't for a 460 or a diesel.

I have to admit it does resemble a ZF, but everything I can find shows nothing like that... Then again I cannot find a good pic of one with an internal slave.
And everything I have shows subtle differences that just don't fit...
But I am human and I could very well be wrong! Been so many times, and I'm sure I'll be many times again! ...
I would be interested in seeing the numbers on the ID plate!
Pretty sure its is a ZF most just look a little different because of the clutch fork opening but the the PTO plates exactally opposite each other and if you look closely at the second pic you can barely see the ID plate right above the PTO cover where it should be. Yeah it sure would help to know what kinda truck it is too.

I pried that sucker off and its a ZF s 5-42. I thought it was stuck on there, till i realized it was held on with rivets. I popped it off and cleaned it off and typed it in google. and sure enough, i found a trans that looks better comparison than the zf 5. I was stumped cuz i thought there was going to be a tag on a bolt somewhere on the trans, which there was not. Hunting is over. Thanks guys.
