I have a 95 f150 xlt 4x4 with a 5.8 351. i have tried to change out the inner and outer bearings on the pass side, but have failed miserably... i can get as far as removing the 3 screws from the hub cover and getting the cover down... after that i stare blankly at the inner workings looking for these snap and or retaining rings that i dont seem to have...
i have one small ring about 1/8" in diameter that sits just outside the center piece... i have been told if i poke it in a few spots there should be a spot that it seperates... no dice... and as for an actual snap ring there isnt one...
if anyone has step by steps with pictures or can lead me to a video i would greatly appriciate it. i have the haynes but it shows a hub assembly with six screws plus a stop screw... im just getting annoyed with this here bearing problem...
After you remove the 3 screws and the hub, you need to find and remove the large (3" OD) lock-ring that holds the internal assembly in place.
This lock ring is in a groove that is located in the ID of the hub. It is probably covered with grease so you don't see it. Removing the lock ring takes a couple of very small screwdrivers and some patience.
Once the lock ring is removed, you can pull the hub internals and get access to the wheel bearing assembly. As I remember you next remove a snap ring from the hub stub shaft and remove the washers that are behind it. Remember the exact orientation of the items you removed so that they can go back the same way.
The wheel bearing nut requires a special rounded 6-point socket to remove it. A standard socket will not work. You need to get this special tool if you plan to remove and reinstall the wheel bearings.
Hey Arktos, were you able to figure this out? I have the same rig, and the same problem. The large snap ring doesn't want to come out and wondering if you had any suggestions....
You should use a dental pick or similar tool to work under one end of the outer snap ring and gradually work it out of the groove.
The outer ring is hard to see but it is there. It is what holds the assembly in the hub.
sorry, i have not figured it out yet, i went on vacation before i was able to tackle this job again i will probably try it in a day or two when i return home
It is a nice morning and it was bothering me I couldn't get that hub apart, so I decided to give Mcleod's idea of the dental pick a try this morning before work... had the snap ring out in less than 30 seconds. I had tried small screw drivers and even made a bent hook, but the dental pick was the right tool for the job. Thanks again for tbe help and idea. Good luck Arktos... it works.
