Sputter when towing

. History- running bad last time i towed(9k lb. 5er). Changed fuel filter when I got home , copper color speckles all over it only about 3000 miles on it. Oil 5-40 Rotella syn,3k miles, trans fluid clean no smells. Put in a new rear diff abs sensor for just b/c. Let my fuel run almost empty added 5 gal fresh fuel and a bit of POWER DISEL, had always used Racor additive concentrate. The difference was remarkable. Then after about 20 miles brakes acting wierd- start to hold then let go then catch right before bottom(abs was not 'Fluttering'dry road.). After another 20 miles the truck ran and idled great, super quite no vibration, shifted smooth too. (Wish some else was driving so I could here it pass)Then I pulled my trailer around the block...... ABS LITE on again, brakes acting like maybe yes maybe no, and engine was spttering awfull. unhooked came to work this AM back to great!!!!!!
As far as i know its all stock bought 2 yrs ago w 124k now161k. '99 f250 a/t
Where do i start?

Welcome to FTE.
Where to start?
With all the problems that you are describing, it sounds to me like a loose ground cable or something like that.
The copper flecks in the fuel filter: The only place that I know where to find copper/brass is the injector cups and/or the sealing washers at the bottom of the injectors.

Any chance the fuel pump internals are letting go Dan?

Welcome to FTE fifthwheel01. Can you tell us if the specs on the filter where actually copper, brass or some metallic substance, or just something with that coloring? There's also a possibility that your new additive is cleaning some junk out of your tank, and that's what's causing the sputtering. If so, you'll likely end up having to drop the tank and clean the screens in the mixing chamber.

That wouldn't explain the brake issues though. As Dan suggested, check the grounds, but don't forget the simple stuff like making sure the brake fluid is full, the power steering fluid is full of ATF, and the engine oil is full.

Okay, Thanks for the replies. Fluids all okay, After work today I'll pull and clean the battery cables and connections.
New development---- this morning while shopping the local garage sales it went wacko. Driving between 10-15mph (speed limit 20 area) it started surging 3 quik jumps like a horse the leaving the gate. Then settled down right away. then 20 minutes later it shook like it was running on 2 cylinders but did not die, I parked, opened the hood w/ nothing out of the ordinary i opened the latch on air filter (stock) perked up right away.

Went to have codes pulled:
p1280 ICP Circuit out of range low

p0470 Exhaust pressureSensor Cuircuit fault

P 1298 Idm Fault

P 1284 Icp Fault Aborts KOER/CCT test

Should I change out ICP, EBPS, and Idm? IF so any particular order?

Garage I went to is NOT diesel but they recommended "replacing computer"??????

Thanks Again
Fifthwheel01

ps: went to napa took out old a/f replaced w napa gold a/f

Next time you have this issue, try unplugging the ICP to see if that helps. In the mean time, check the wiring from the ICP and IPR to make sure there's no chaffed spots, or the insulation has become brittle.

Did the shop clear the codes for you? That way you know which ones come back? The P0470 is your lowest priority, but if you're wanting something to do, you can clean out the tube. Welcome to guzzle's Exhaust Backpressure Sensor Cleaning Maintenance Web Page

I second this. Especially checking the wiring part.
.

Replacing the computer is the last thing on the list.

Thanks, bought a new abs sensor from Napa looks just like the one I took off originally ( 3 concave sides plastic). The one from Advance auto round metal cylinder. Drove it about 10 miles in neighborhood areas and brakes are good now.

Didn't get to do anything else yet/ Dr.'s appointment yesterday-- What a paaain in the differential !!!! I should be good to go at it again by thursday of Friday. Think I might replace my battery cable's, they seem to have lots of corosion (white powdery stuff) anything I should know before I start??? Oh and if you can tell me where to find the picture with all the sensor locations I sure would appreeciate it. I looked but cant find it.

thanks again

Thanks F350-6 and Kwikkordead. Checked the Icp, leaking oil at the plug. Cleaned the plug connection w electrical cleaner bought a new ICP from FORD, which was different than than the one on there. The old one was brass base and took a 9/16" wrench to remove, the new one silver metal color w 1 1/8" base. Did not find any chaffing on any wires. Removed and cleaned battery cables and connections, and topped off the batteries .
Drove it 20 miles expressway and nieghborhood WOW can't belive how much power it has and how quietand smooth it is !!!

Next week end I'll pull the EPBS and pipe. Where can I get "PB Blaster" and where can I get more info on AE?

thanks Again
