ABS Question - The Light Is On

The ABS idiot light is on in my 1996 F250 4x4/351. I have no idea as to how to go about troubleshooting ABS issues. I figured I'd first take a look at the lines, modules, etc. at the rear of the truck.

Nothing no one here probably does not already know, but I see a brake line from the front going into a proportining valve attached to the rear axle. The brake line splits and seperate lines run to the wheel cylinders (obviously). An electronic module is attached to the top of the differential, presumably to tell the computer when the wheels are locking up. From the top of the proportioning valve on the axle is a rubber hose that runs back up by the gas & brake lines on the frame rail.

At the end of this rubber hose is a 45 degree-angled coupler WITH NOTHING ON THE OTHER SIDE. What is the purpose of this rubber hose and what is it supposed to connect to??

Edit: Now that I'm thinking about it, this rubber hose may be used to regulate the pulsing of the brakes from the computer?

First off the rubber hose with nothing on the end of it is the breather for the rear axle.
As for the RABS check the simple things first. Is the brake fluid up to the proper level? Do the wiring connections at the master cyl. look clean and tight? Are your brake lights working OK?

Right on. I'm going into this (reconditioning this truck) thinking that everything is automatically screwed up off the bat. I see a hose with an unconnected connector and think a module or something is missing.

The brake fluid is full and the connectors were spliced as the master cylinder was allegedly changed out by the previous owner. It is connected and it looks like he did a good job. All brake lights work.

Master cylinder changed out. Hmm......

Another common problem is the sensor on the rear diff. You might take it out (lift out carefully) and clean it and see if that helps. Also trace the wiring along the frame and make sure it is not damaged.

Check your brake fluid first, like was said before. That solved my problem, except for the leaky brake line which was the reason for the level being low in the first place.
