Typical tail shaft play tolerance?

Typical tail shaft play tolerance?
Test drove a 99 E-350 van today and at 45-50 mph there was a vibration , fast, almost a buzz.
Stopped and selected reverse and noticed a "kick" when tranny shifted. Placed in Drive and noticed another "kick" when tranny shifted.
(trying to determine if U-joints had slop by a ringing sound in drive shaft when tranny changes direction) ( no ringing)
Drove back to driveway and put tranny in neutral with engine off to check U- joints.
Found U-joints ok but tail shaft at tranny had 1/8" or so of side to side free play..........
I am concerned about this play and also the "kick" when shifting.
Any advice or comments appreciated.
