that's the nature of a carb to be honest. but you might check vacuum, bad gas, air cleaner, idle mixture.

Check to make sure the choke is operational.

Tune your carburetor. Choke may be maladjusted.
I can start mine at 20F with only one stroke.

First you're going to need to check the choke pulloff diaphragm to make sure it has the ability to hold vacuum. If it doesn't, replace it.
Then you need to check your choke pulloff. After that, the fast idle cam be aligned properly. Then the choke should be set to factory specs.
Do a search here on in the fuel forum - it's been covered recently a few times.

easiest thing to do Is just install a manual choke and let the engine WARM up before hitting the road.

could be a bad thermostat, easily tested just put a vacuum on it and see if it moves

I prefer a manual choke also. I like to control engine speed myself when its warming up.

I got to agree with Jermafenser, I set my Motorcraft 2150 to work with all the factory parts and adjusted properly including the choke pull off, the choke itself, and the duct from the exaust manifold to the air intake, all intact and working properly I can start my truck even below zero after one pump to set the choke, it starts right up and fast idles on it's own perfectly.
