Question Mpg

I have a 1988 F-150 4.9L, recently took a 2800 mile road trip and I only got about 14 mpg. Wondering what others get with their older F-150's.

I have an auto transmission, I also have a truck that has faulty fuel gauges which were subject to recall back in the day. So my estimates might be off a tad.

Is your transmission an overdrive tranny or a C6??

The direct drive of the C6 and no overdrive would be a big factor in your MPG.

Thanks for the input! Any ideas on ways to get better fuel mileage?

Depending on how many miles you drive a year, it might be worthwhile to buy an older car that will get 30 to 35 MPG. If you swapped to an AOD tranny that would give you overdrive and better mileage. A manual transmission with overdrive would give you the best mileage. Combine it with a high axle ratio and you could be close to 20mpg highway.

My F-150 gets 13 or so. I just don't expect much better.

keep a close eye on your tire pressures, that can have a big impact, also things like draggin brakes or vacum leaks can kill mpgs. keeping the engine in good tune never hurt either. if you do alot of highway travel a tonneau cover would help out on the highway, if your willing to have a cover over your bed, although they only take a few minutes to roll up if you need to put something big in the bed

Yeah.. you can't use the fuel gauge to calculate milage.. you have to use the odometer and record the amount of fuel used at a fill up. That means your speedo has to be accurate of course, if tires are something other than stock size the speedo should be recalibrated.

I thought my mileage was bad until this wek. I had been getting 12-13 real steady around town. Put a ladder rack on a few weeks ago, and dropped to 11-12mpg. This week I pulled a 6x12 open top two axle utility trailer from U-Haul. Drove about 100 miles around town taking tree limbs etc to the dump. I could see the gauge dropping as I drove. Trailer weighs about 2800 lbs. Best I can figure, I was getting around 6 or 7 MPG while pulling the trailer.
That is some seriously bad mileage.

4.9L 4x2 4.11 gear with 31'' tires. I get 16.5 @ 60 if my tires are aired to max. I'm going on a much longer trip and I plan on keeping my tires aired 5 lbs lighter, at 35 psi. I'm expecting to get 14.5 to 15 mpg. I will be under load (don't know how much) and going faster than 60 this time.

The 4.9 is a big motor. Just because it has six pistons doesn't mean spit.

I check my gas mileage on my company truck and my personal truck everytime I fill up.
My work truck is a well beaten 92 F150 300, E40D, reg cab 8' bed, 3.08 gears that is primarily a site truck with some road use to get parts. It gets about 10 to 13 mpg.
My personal truck is a 95 300, 5 speed, ext cab 6' bed, 3.08s and it manages 16-19mpg on my daily, mostly highway, commute.
Both are 2wd and have 235/75/15 tires. Other 300s that I have had will manage about 15mpg in mixed driving. Best mileage in a 1/2 ton full size was my 89 Chevy with the 4.3 V6 = 21 Mpg. Great ride, decent power, but not as good a truck as the Ford.

rikard
