I have a 1991 F-150 4x4 with E4OD trans. Well the trans went on it. It would work sometimes but not always and when it did, it wouldn't shift into drive. Well I got a new trans, used but new to me, anyways. Now it works all the time and is strong, but it only shifts into second it won't go to drive or OD. It acts as if it is in low range, but its actually in 2H. Has anyone ever had this problem or could think of an issue that might cause this, I'm not sure if something could go with the computer telling it when to shift or what or if any of that is even involved. It seems weird that it would do some of the same things as the old trans, but a trans shop confirmed that the old trans was in fact shot. Thanks for any help. This has been a problem for a while now and i finally got it back on the road and now its doing this...
Ok... what exactly does that stand for and is there an easy fix or is testing that basically seeing if your trans is any good! Workin on this thing is all new to me so thanks for the help
Sorry my P got ahead of the L in my post above.
The MLPS (Manual Lever Position Sensor) has gave a lot of problems.
When the transmission works OK manually not using OD but does not work right in OD this sensor is the problem most of the time.
The fix is to replace the sensor with an up graded sensor and I think you have to swap two wires to use the replacement sensor from Ford. I do not have the TSB at hand right now to read about it.
alright i'll look into that, thanks for the help. its just strange that it feels like its in low range but in 2 wheel drive, hopefully that may be the culprit.
