hey im getting ready to do the same thing to an 86 f250 with a 6.bought the truck new and never was fond of the 6. i buought a donner truck 84 f15 351 w to get the motor and stufff to do it. I know the motor mounts and fly wheel and rad have to go. as for all the other things, i guess we'll find out.
what i have plans for are flat top pistons .30 over, cam i havent picked out yet??? . the motor came with a 4v elderbrock carb all most new and a factory 4v intake. going to use long tube headers..and some kind of cold air intake..
going to use the truck for towing.
Its a pretty simple swap you need motor mounts flywheel (if its an auto) fuel pump, I dont believe you have to do a radiator change but I am not 100% sure. If you have a good 351W itll beat the 300 on torque and horsepower but youll loose the fuel economy battle. In my opinion they are the best two motors you could possibly have in your truck. I have a 85 with a 351W and a 94 with a 300 both great motors.
nay radiator and motor mounts are identical... all ford small blocks used the same mounts... from the 289 to the 351W... unless you have a 351M(modified) or a 351C(Cleveland) i'm doing the same swap...
but the flywheel does need a swap, you're right there!
EDIT: 351W=Windsor... sorry forgot to say that
not motor mounts, engine perches the towers that go from the frame/cross member to the motor mounts.you will have to cut the rivets or unbolt them from both trucks, and take out I6 ones out,and put V8 ones in.also watch what rad you put in there is two different mounting options.one style has hangers off the side, the other mounts on the top and bottom of the tanks.
Yes im acually not looking to tow much but i want the top end power of the 8. I fiddled with the 300 for a while trying to figure out why she was low on power till i did a compression test.....Bout 90-100psi across the board. Thats a lil low for my liking
bigred
thanks for the heads up on the radiator mounts, check that this weekend. and the 6 banger when new never got better than 14 mpg, i had a 93 351w efi that got 17 mpg on the interstate all around the 351 had better mpg than the i6, not to foreget the power.
the motor swap im not to worryed about..
what i want to swap more than the motor is the A/C
the f 250 im going to dive has no A/C and the donner truck has it, i want to change it over too. the doner is onley missing the compresser, i have two old ones from and old jeep and would like to use both, one for the A/C and the other for an air compresser. anyone ever done this???
I'm not too sure on how well an a/c compressor would work as an air pump. It kinda works like a 2 stroke engine, the refrigerant it compresses also has a small amount of oil in it, I'm not sure on how you could keep the pump lubricated. If you wanted it to be as simple as possible you would have to have it suck in a small amount of oil only to be pumped into your tank. The whole a/c system only has about 8 oz. of oil. The pump itself is very delicate, any dirt or dust in the pump will destroy it. Plus there can be no moisture in the pump or it will seize. An a/c compressor would make an awesome air pump, but it has too tight of tolerance sense its pumping refrigerant which goes thru a descant, dryer, and a filter.
he used a York-style A/C compressors used by AMC, Ford, Volvo, Porsche, IH, and Oldsmobile in the '70's and early '80's. These have an advantage over other compressors in that they have a separate, internal oil reservior, while other compressors are lubricated by the freon in the A/C system
i have used the ford style A/C compessor for years as air pumps. with or with out a tank, with a tank works much better. i just use a pressure switch from a normal air compressor like used at home, wire it to the clutch on the compresor and to a toggle switch on the dash, the intake line to the compressor i add a foam filter with oil, the other line will be the pressure line and hook it to a tank or to a quick connector. every once in a while i clean and reoil the filter. it will work just like at home ''120 psi""...just remember the bigger the tank the bigger the volume.i am a jeeper from way back!!!
anyone ever done the A/C swap one a truck?????
