First off, I am going to assume you have a gas motor. The MAF sensor is a pair of very fine wires stuck in the middle of the air flow. On the 99-04, it's in the half of that big canister the filter is not in. I am not sure how the 05+ is set up. However, look for a harness going into the intake tract, the MAF and IAT should be really close by.
Thanks for the response. And yes its a 5.4 2001 I should have established that first but anyhoo is there a safe way to clean this. What are your suggestions.
If you don't have a cold air kit, then you need to unclamp the air filter, then unclamp the MAF housing. As long as the key is off and you aren't spraying directly into the intake, I think you can leave it plugged in. I've always been under the impression that the platinum coated wires are fragile and shouldn't be touched. So I use a non-residue electrical contact cleaner or MAF cleaner in spray cans. Hose the elements off and let it air dry. It should dry in a few seconds.
Inspect it, if it isn't shinny spray it again until it is. Then reassemble the intake.
With cold air kits the MAF is removed from that big housing and is easier to work on. On my K&N system, I remove the filter, and undo the hose coupler so I am not spraying in the intake system. Then hose down the element and reassemble.
