Electric problem

I have have a short, the alternator charging wire is shorted out, looks to me like it runs with/through the main harness. The batteries are not charging, but i was also wondering if something like that could cause my truck to cut out, smoke and pop at about 2500 rpms and when you hammer down on it, but once past that rpm it hits hard. I know it has a short cause i touched a hot wire from battery to the charging wire without the alternator hooked up and it sparked. Any advise on what or where to start would be greatly appreciated.

Some one called??

If your lucky you may be able to see a burnt or chaffed spot on the loom. If not then you are going to have to open the loom up and look for the problem there.

When you have a short like this you are introducing the + to the -(ground) of the system. Where a lot of the electronics switch the ground (known as sinking) all sorts of things can happen.

The charging wire is it apart of the harness or just wrapped together?

Ok i got the short fixed, but my truck still runs alittle rough, popping through the exhaust if i hammer down on it. Could some one please give me some advise, could it be a fuel problem or vacumm, I would think if its a fuel problem it would not clear up after it pops or in higher rpms.

I'm glad that you got the short fixed. Where was it located?

Are you getting any SES lights? It's not a vacumme problem our trucks only use that for the ESOF and the heat vent controls.

What is the condition of all the basics Oil fresh full and the right type? Air filter clean? Fuel filter changed recently?

This is what I did, had an oil leak around the oil pan could not get to seal so I pulled the motor. Sealed the pan and put back in, first had an exhaust leak before the turbo at the adapter for the up pipes. Fiexed that stopped alot of the smoking and no power problem. Then noticed the battery light on and then batteries went dead after a few starts never drove it during this time. The short problem really wasn't a short I forgot to hook the charging wire back up to the battery terminal feel like a dummy. But now still smokes slightly when getting on it, and pops once and then hits hard afterwards when I hammer on it.
