As you can see from the title the front hubs on my 1996 F-150 won't engauge. The transfer case engauges, the front drive shaft spins and yes the 4x4 light comes on. I have a shifter lever model and not a pusbutton model 4x4. I have a few questions on this and not the least of which is how to fix it. First, how are my hubs actuated(vaccum or electronic)? Next is what is the most common cause of this problem? Can this model 4x4 be shifted on the fly into 4hi? I would really like to get this fixed as I have gotten stuck 2 times now because I thought I had 4x4 locked in and didn't.
I had this posted in the offroad / 4x4 area, but no one seems to respond to it there. Seems like you guys might have some ideas.
Your hubs are mechanical, not electric or vacuum. Do you have three or five screws holding the cover on? Anyway, sometimes when the wheel bearings are serviced, the hubs are mistakenly packed with grease. This can cause problems. You can try to clean them out and lightly coat the parts with grease, or replace them with aftermarket manual hubs. If you have three screws, you will need an additional conversion kit. I have "shift on the fly" in and out of 4HI by locking my manual hubs before I get to where I may need four wheel drive. My Superwinch hubs worked flawlessly offroading this past weekend.
