A few weeks ago at about change of weather the truck began running rough through the transition from idle to power mode. once rolling down the road in cruise mode again the motor would run rough. I have an Edelbrock 1406 on a stock manifold with a 1inch riser. For a year or so I have been running one leaner position from the book but since this problem arose I went back to stock without any good result. While inspecting the cap and rotor I noticed a sinificant amount of black dust in the distributor. I also found when pulling the vacumn advance hose from the carb the problem went away. Everyone seems to think the truck is then too rich but no matter which jets and needles I put in it acts basically the same way. I'm thinking some thing mechanical in the Distributor. Any idea on this one? It's baffling me.
If so, grab the rotor and push and pull back and forth towards the points, both at the high spot on the cam, and the low spot and maybe even inbetween, and see if the points open and close.
The top bushing in the distributor wears out, and as the advance pulls the points back and forth, it can cause the dwell to walk all over the place.

If unplugging the vacuum advance hose from your carb made the problem go away, you can confidently assume that your mechanical advance is not your problem. Maybe a vacuum leak.
