I was driving my truck the other day doing about 40mph and then i heard a big clunking and my driveshaft went flying out. The yokes on the rear snapped right in half. What caused this and is it hard to replace, costly?
I can't give axact causes, just a bunch of educated guesses, so I won't post what you're probably already guessing.
But how about some pictures of the yoke? Can you scan them or use a digital camera? A picture would better describe where on the yokes it broke, and it would be neat to see.
Just a guess, the u-joint done quit and took out the yoke when it went in an explosive type way. Seen this on the front axle shafts before, takes the ears right of the yokes.
should i just get a whole new driveshaft from the scrap yard, buy a new one or just repair these? Which would be cheaper and what do i need to replace these with?
I was thinking it was junkyard time, plus new U-joints since you'll have it right in front of you.
My co-worker just got a junkyard rear driveshaft & yokes for his Blazer. Since the U-joints that came with the assembly had grease fittings (which might mean they weren't the original U-joints, but it does mean someone would have had the chance to keep them lubricated), he thought he'd just leave the old U-joints in it. Turns out it works fine.
You'll need your tranny model, wheelbase measurement, and rear-end info.
