Had the Same Problem

That sounds like the tensioner bearing going bad. I begain hearing the same sound after about 6 years and 2 belts later. When the bearing fail, the serpentine belt will start to rub and break at any time. Mine broke just when I exit the freeway. Shut off the truck and let it coast and watch the temperature gauge climb. Luckily no overheating.

It's an inexpensive and easy fix. Do it now before it's too late.

Just can't help thinking that you have the same problem that I did on my 3.0L V-6. I changed the idler pulley and the serpentine belt and still had the noise only difference is I could hear mine all the time, even at idle. There are two parts to the cam synchronizer, a) the cam position sensor which screws to the top of the cam synchronizer much like the conventional rotors used to and b) cam synchronizer which looks much like a distributor with the shaft and gear that engage the cam. When I spun the cam synchronizer by hand after it was out of the engine I could hear the exact same cricket sound that it made in the engine. If you can only hear yours at 2000 rpm then maybe that is why you are not picking it up with the stethescope. Just looked the part up on ebay and it is still $50. It also comes with a small alignment tool that helps you get it in the correct position. Ford dealers will charge you about 6 or 7 times that to install it. If your dealer just changed the sensor and not the synchronizer then that may be why you still have the noise. Good Luck and let us know how you make out.

No particular event. Just started one day out of the blue. Completaly left only once, on a trip, stopped to gas up, got back on road and the crickets were gone, stopped after about 150 mi. to get a snack got back on the road and the crickets were back. Only time in last 10,000 km noise free. No ryme nor reason I or anyone I know can see.

Well given the noise sounds like it's bouncing off the firewall, I like the prvious poster jamesemery728's idea about it being the cam synchronizer, into which the cam sensor fits.
Makes sense to me, read his post carefully, bet the Dealer only replaced the cam sensor!!!!!

Oops sorry, should have read you posts more carefully. You did test to verify the idler is not the cause.

I appreciate the replies but keep hoping that someone has run in to the unusual, the noise is not anything to do with the belt, the pulleys or tensioner. The synchronizer assembly was changed by the dealer, my bad for referring to it as the sensor.
There is no sign of an exhaust leak, we even plugged exhaust while engine running to check system, no change in sound. Engine noise is present above 2200 rpm with or without load, stops instantly when throttle is released.
????????

Seeing that the dealer replaced the synchronizer assembly, maybe they got a bad one. Might be worthwhile to replace it again. Sometimes new parts just aren't right.
