Henry, your 302/C4 combo uses 1 vacuum line to the trans modulator. There is a vacuum port in the manifold just behind the carb. Use this as your trans vacuum source not the carb. If you have power brakes the booster is normally tied into the same port.

truck was running fine, then shifting problems first then starting problems, at a point where it could be wires, cap rotor...etc, as i started looking these vaccuum lines appear as they were not connected, seems like advance problems, but the advance sol. has a conn. source.. any help is appreciated...

Pappie, I'd check your starting problem first. The shifting problem may be a result of power loss.

thanks for the reply, it starts right up now, but sometimes it bogs and then catchs, crazy shifting, but cant find any vaccuum leaks, it probably needs full tune up first, and all new hoses, cant just keep patching it up..it was fine and then all this started..everything is just old and worn out. still open for all the help I can get...

Pappie is it smoking a bit by chance? Trans modulators have been known to fail and allow trans fluid to be drawn into the engine and burned. This can cause rough running and erratic shifting.

hello again and thank you for your help, it doesnt smoke when its running but it always put out one puff when I start it... but I think that since this problem started it is a bigger cloud when started..and the trans fluid is a bit low, and it had been staying full. the trans was rebuilt just before I bought it..

I wS thinking that smoke on starting is worn valve guides?, havn't done comp. test, or too much of anything as the truck was running fairly well, weak oil pressure after it gets good and hot..rebuilt the rear axle and brakes, thats all I've done to it...

Crawl under it and pull the vacuum hose off of the modulator. If trans fluid drips out or the hose is wet inside the modulator needs replaced.
