I am having trouble pulling the codes on my 1994 ford Explorer w/ a 4.0. When i connect my test light to do a self-test, I get nothing. Well to say that is wrong, i get a solid light instead of flashes. I have checked and rechecked, but I hooked it up right... what could this mean? Bad ECU?
Possibly. I would think it's more likely a bad connection between the self-test connector and the ECU or no power to the ECU or a bad ground or some other wiring fault before I would blame the ECU.
Even though the test light isn't blinking, what is the CEL doing? If you've got the jumper wire in right, the CEL should flash out the codes as well.
the check engine light is solid as well, i think. i was afraid it may be a bad ground, although the problem kept started not so bad and was intermittent. it got worse tho to the point that I had to put it away. i had changed the fuel pump and solenoid in vain...

If its not working right, get a basic code reader. I prefer the ones with the digital display, easier than counting flashes, plus they tell you what the codes mean without having to look it up in a book. If you plan on keeping a pre-obd-II ford around, I think they are must haves. If you have both EEC-IV and OBD-II vehicles, get one that can read both.
