'04 Excursion / Superduty E-brake_problem and finding
Hey all!
If you ever hear a grinding/popping coming from your rear wheels that can also be accompanied by a 'jerking' at take off or stopping, check your e-brake backing plate for rust thru. You can see it by climbing under and taking a look or looking cross car at the backside of your brake assembly.
Both of mine rusted thru and it let some pins and other good stuff start to float around in the housing (the drum e-brake is housed in the rear disc rotors). The binding and popping were from the parts floating around and getting hung up. It also did a nice job of gouging up the e-brake surface
For now I have just pulled the 'guts' out of the e-brake until I determine how hard and how much $ it's going to replace the backing plates and e-brake internals (I think you have to pull the axle). If anyone knows, please let me know.
Here are a few pictures.
Take care,
Paul

Pins...supposed to be straight and not cut/ground down!
hey 047x, i have the exact same problem with my 04 f250. the backing plates rusted out and so my e brake is not working. new plates cost $350.00 each plus the shoes and all the small parts, and you have to remove everything to replace them. my friend who is a mechanic rigged mine up with a longer pin and washer to connect the spring to and removed all of the broken pieces out of the rotor hat which houses the e-brake drum because the noise was driving me crazy but the e-brake is useless. don't have the money right now to replace the backing plates so i just don't use the e brake for now. let me know how you make out.
i wish i was but i checked myself just to be sure. that's the only problem i have with ford is the cost of parts. i think they make a better product than the others but the parts are ridiculous. gm parts are less but breakdown more often so you can't win either way. i try not to park on any hills so as not to stress the tranny with no e brake. if you can find the part for less let me know.
I called Ford to get a quick/rough estimate. The said (are you sitting down?) ~$1300! It's about $800 in parts and the rest in labor.
I have an engineering background so I feel I can say this: Do they actually think about servicibility when they design these things? $1300 because metal plates rusted out and requires a complete disassembly of your rear braking system and pulling of your axle.
i hate to say i told you so but i told you so. they don't want you to fix it yourself and then they charge ridiculous prices to fix something that should never need fixing. i had to replace an abs control valve because i had no pedal pressure and no one could figure out the problem. we tried new master cylinders, more than once and a few other things until we determined what the cause was and guess what. the part is so rarely replaced that i had to order it from Detroit. cost, $800.00 just for the part. good luck.
