Please help!!!

I keep having alot of issue with my door latches. I just replaced both switches and both latches. They same problem still exists being that the door switches work in reverse of how they should. When the doors are open the lights go out. Its suppsoed to work how any door switch works. When you open the door the switch opens and connects the circuit. Its working oppsite. With 2 new door latches its still got the same promblem. I ahev no idea whats wrong. Does someone out there have any advice. My truck is a 2002 f350 crew short bed lariet with 7.3.

The problem may be with the GEM. The lighs ground with the switch made. There was a thread some time ago with the same problem. It turned out to be a GEM issue. IIRC

Well then why is it when i take the switch out and use it manualy it works the way it should. If it is the GEM where is it behind the fuse box? Is it kinda like a dumbed down body controler? Im used to body controler issues since i do alot of ESC work on international trucks. Im new to chassis work on superdutys so i dont know my way around yet. Do you know of any ways to check this? Any hints to give?

I had issues with my interior lights not working, the auto headlights not working and the radio not turning off when I removed the ignition keys.

The issue was a busted/fried VSM (Vehicle Security Module) Since your truck is a '02 it should have a VSM (not a GSM - from earlier trucks...) located behind the radio, mounted on the inside of the firewall - a small black box with three plugs - took me about an hour to get access to it. Don't know if there is a procedure to check it, I zoned in on the VSM being the problem thru reading posts on this, and other websites - just do searches under VSM or GEM and see what pops up.....

Cost was about $120 bucks for the VSM from FTE PartsGuy (that was the cheapest price I found by a mile !) AND $145 for the Stealership to reprogam it -took them all but about 20 minutes!

Good luck...

In my case they worked only if:

1. I was turning them on and off with the switch on the dash.

2. When I removed the keys from the ignition and opened the door. (they would go out as they should a few moments later).

They would not work just when I opened the doors....

I do remember reading a similar issue as yours someone had on one of the forums (not sure which one - sorry) and remember someone suggested/asked if the polarity on the wires for the were switched - that did not make too much sense to me so I did not read much further than that.....

The original VSM's in the 2002 are notoriously BAD. The new ones have a different part number, upgraded in 2003 (and you get to pay for it).

The dealer has to scan your old one while connected, install the new one and reprogram it with your scanned data.

All of the research I have done during the time I had the issue with my VSM involved 2002 year trucks. I don't think I saw any 2003 or later trucks.

In my case the old VSM was so bad/fried the dealer was not able to download the data into the new one. The build sheet I had, complements FTE PartsGuy, was used to restore the data !

I apologize I didn't see that your truck was an 02. You don't have a GEM it is a VSM.

I can't find the other thread but it did turn out to be a VSM issue. The signal from the door switch is "routed" through the VSM for the interior lights.

Well im going with what you guys have said. It seems to be the issue. Im going to to check one more thing before i do that. Going to pull the switches out and see if by manually oushing them if it works right. I tried it once but i want to check it again. How much is the VSM? I know it will cost 90 for ford for minum of 1 hour computer time.
