Where can I buy or view the wiring diagram of my 79 f100. I am trying to eliminate wires that I dont need and also find the wires that go to the stereo. Thanks.
This is a disaster waiting to happen. I can't count how many times this question has been asked, only for the guy to come back a week later because his tail lights don't work, or his wipers won't work when the brakes are pressed, etc. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
There are two wires running to the stereo. Yellow (I can't remember the color stripe, I think red?) is hot in RUN\ACC which powers the radio. Blue with a red stripe is the dash illumination circuit, which powers the backlight for the dial. The radio grounds through its mounting bracket.
I did pull this off with success and added twelve circuits with new blade style fuses. It can be done, it just takes much patience and diligence to follow the schematics and go through the harness. I removed alot of wires and added alot of wires. I don't have my schematic here in front of me...but I will try and remember to look tonight for the colors for sure. My radio is now on a circuit by itself from the new fuse panel. Some of my reasoning was that I changed to IR alternator removing the external regulator and all the wiring associated with that. Pulled the factory stereo and all of a/c controls and box...so didn't need any of that, and then I was adding several relays, electric fans, electric fuel pump, power windows and door solenoids, all aftermarket gauges, etc....so I just bascially removed all of the stuff I no longer needed and upgraded to more modern routing and fuse protection at the same time. Again, it took several weeks to go through everything and solder and shrink new connections, etc.
OK i found the radio wire by unbolting the fuses and looking behind to see what color wires go where. The yellow with red stripe wire that goes to the radio was connected the the cig. lighter. What wire actually runs to the the cigarette lighter? The only wires i found behind the radio were 2 blue/red stripe light wires and the yellow/ red stripe radio wire.
The reason I asked about the schematic is because im adding switches for nitrous, 2 fuel pumps, and a bottle heater and i found a bunch of wires that didnt do anywhere. I also found the back up light wires and hooked them up to my B&M prostick as well as a neutral saftey switch.
My truck has a full MSD ignition set-up as well as a 1 wire altenator and there are alot of wires that went to the old altenator, voltage regulator, and duraspark and i want to clean up under the hood some. I guess i will cut the plugs off and save them in the very slim chance that I put the stock parts back on.
One question though. Why do the back up lights run from one side of the engine bay to the other before going to the back of the truck?
Exactly why, and basically what I did. On my '73 my cigaretter lighter wire was a dark color, maybe all green and it's got a 90 degree little rubber boot on the end. Wiring could have changed somewhat in 6 years...that's why I put my '73 schematic (where my radio wire was blk/red, according to Haynes, your's is yellow/red), but for the most part the wire colors are the same across Ford year models. The blue red stripe is for all dash illumination.
