Premium unleaded is unnecessary unless your vehicle requires it to run without experiencing engine knock/pre-detonation. Following the manufacturer's recommendation is the best bet.

Is there a down side to using premium when its not required? Other than waisting money, there is no significant downside however there is absolutely NO benefit. Running a higher octane fuel than required can actually decrease fuel mileage slightly though the difference is minimal.

Many folks are under the impression that premium gasoline will produce more power. By itself, that is incorrect. Premium fuel (higher octane) has a slightly lower less power content per a given volume than lower octane gasoline. However a vehicle intended to be run on higher octane gasoline will produce more power because the engine's ECM will retard ignition timing to avoid pre-detonation (knocking) when running a gasoline with insufficient octane. Retarding the ignition timing causes the engine to produce less maximum power and decreases efficiency (gas mileage).

If your vehicle is intended to run on 87 octane gasoline, it will produce the best power output and efficiency with 87 octane gasoline.

If your vehicle is intended to run on 92 octane gasoline, it will produce the best power output and efficiency with 92 octane gasoline.

Regular is fine but premium and super would also be fine. From what i read about the engine it will put out it's qouted power with regular which is great. I seen a few people on here with 09's say they get better MPG with Premium but i aint tested mine with it yet so it could be worth a try.

While we're on the this topic, I have a question. I remember either reading somewhere or being told that running premium over an extended period of time in an engine designed for regular could cause damage. It seems like whatever/whoever said that it could cause damage to the valves or valve seats because of increased combustion temperatures or something along those lines.

Does anyone know if there's any truth to this? It seems like hocus pocus to me, but who am I to say?

Premium gassoline in engines tuned to run on regular can cause the valves and combustion chamber to develop increasing amounts of deposits. Premium has a slower burn than regular, and should only be used in high compression engines, or engines with increased amount of ignition timmimg. Some older engines with high milage and spark knocking (pre-ignition) can benifit from premium to stop or minimize this problem due to the slower burn.

I thought that the engine ajusts it's self to suit different fuels. There's a bit in the manual about this saying that when changeing fuel type the truck may run strange for a couple of miles until it ajusts it's self to current fuel mixtures? I have never had a vehicle that has ever run on anything less than 98ron and they use to be fine running on 100ron. They even said 98 and above.

Some vehicles like the 2010 Mustang GT can run on premium and the ecm will make adjustments. The Mustang will provide a broader torque curve when running premium, but I haven't heard of the F-150's being able to make these kinds of adjustments.
