CV PI Tranny.
99% of the time the transmission shifts as expected, reliably, and finds the right gear without hunting, without perceived slipping, etc. Business as usual.
Once in a while however, it will not downshift out of overdrive, and this results in a lugging feeling and the engine valves rattle like mad as the EFI tries to overpower the load but of course it cannot. I back off the throttle then "romp" it and it will shift as expected and be fine for days afterwards.
The problem is I cannot find a driving habit where this is repeatable - it happens when it feels like and that's all there seems to be to it.
The fluid is red and only 10K old (car has 61K on it) and when the car is behaving as expected it truly runs well, at least as far as I push it. Certainly I don't bounce it off the rev limiter. The tranny is not leaking and the fluid is in the dead center of the cross hatch, as it always is.
I took off the electrical connectors and cleaned them with electrical contact cleaner and put them back on making sure they are tight and sealing properly, and while inspecting them nothing looked coroded in any way.
I went through all the dealer recalls and tech bulletins, and I didn't find a thing. The car has no mods or freaky code changes as this is a family vehicle and I was instructed in 1999 "do not touch" and I've honored that.
I took it to my local service station whom I trust and they and I went through books and books of stuff and didn't find anything to lead us down even a semi-obvious path, then confessed their usual answer for oddball transmission problems is to order a Jasper reman and bolt it in as that's easier than deciphering the sometimes puzzling clues.
The tranny shop across the street insisted that CV trannies are "notorious for binding both planetary gearsets at the same time around 55K or thereabouts and the only answer is to rebuild the whole thing end to end - for $2795 plus installation".
I never heard of such a thing, so I'm curious what you guys might think. We do tend to use this car more for local driving with some highway driving, but we don't pound on it at all.
Might anyone have an idea? I have absolutely none, and unfortunately automatics are not exactly my area of knowledge, other than the fluid should be red and not brown ;-)
