Welcome to the forum. I might suggest a Haynes or Chiltons manual from your local parts house. It should have detailed instructions.

secure your truck from moving. pull drive shaft, front and back for four wheel drive. disconnect all electrical plugs. lift trans slightly and secure. youi may have to get the exhaust system out of the way. remove stud bolts on transfer case from transmission. have a good lift to hold the case as it will spin on you easily. I just installed a 86 302 t-bird engine into my 97 Ford f150 super cab 4x4. I had to have an aod built for it with the 31 spline output shaft (Ihave a brand new extra one also) to rid myself of the electrics on the trans. All is working except for the wiring now. I just wired the neutral switch up and back lights. I got a 2g alternator on the 302 but having some difficulty wiring the stator wires to feed correctly on the ignite sides. I used the existing pipe exhaust system and just set into the y with 302 down pipes. I only have one other problem now. The newly rebuilt transmission hesitates in reverse and forward gear but engages and is strong after the rpms come up enough. can't figure that out yet.
I would go ahead and drop the case as it is not that hard to do, mostly hard to hold and control it taking it down an out an in. You can do maybe. I did it and never did it before. floyd
