What are your thoughts about this programmer??

Hey all,
Its getting closer to time to buy a programmer for my 01 7.3 and I was looking at this one:

Edge Products: Product

Also, I dont plan on using the dash mount that comes with this paticular tuner kit. Does anybody know which one comes withOUT the dash mount??
Please let me know what you guys think.
Thanks.

For what you are going to pay for that

15001 1999-2003 Ford 7.3L Powerstroke Evolution $539.10

You would be much better of going with a DP Tuner (most popular here) or a TW. These are custom tuned for your truck. Alot of the "canned" tunes are just that it will work but not bring out the full potential of your truck.

I am mainly looking to squeeze the MOST amount of MPG's out of my truck as possible, and the occasional "fill the Honda next to me with black smoke as I blow them off the line" performance. I also REALLY like the capability of watching my engine parameters AND checking for codes as well. I think this one also adjusts for tires sizes as well???

If you really want the Evolution then you do better getting the Gryphon from Power Hungry Performance - Gryphon Dash Mount Programmer for 7.3L Power Stroke Diesels
It uses the Evolution hardware. Though if you have a 99-03 then you will not get EGT gauge as its not equipped with an EGT sensor from Ford!! EGT is the most important gauge. You could get the Phoneix with your choice of 6 tunes for $369 I think it is... I would say go with gauges and a flip chip rather than a programmer... You have to stop, turn off the engine and load the program with a programmer like Edge. Flip chips like DP tuner or PHP Pheonix are shift on the fly...

Sorry, but you won't be filling any Hondas with black smoke, or blowing too many people off the line with the edge. If you're doing this strictly for fuel economy, how many miles a year do you drive, and how long will it take you to recover the cost of the tuner?

My advice is, if you want to upgrade, do it right the first time. Any of the 3 options listed above will do much better than the edge.

also against the Edge products i have a buddy that has it on his truck and his 80tune against my DP tuner 80 tune is no competition for me at all (plus his 120 setting is as high as his goes...very little smoke V.S. the DP tuner 120 race and 140 extreme blacks out intersections ... i also have another buddy that had it(edge) then switched to the super chip and will never go back...

Plus with the sale I am running you could save even more on a Custom DP Tuner....

I had the Edge products before going to the DP Tuner. I was pleased with the Edge as it did what I wanted it to do at the time. Mileage improved, had more power than stock, no need for extra gauges, and could pull codes. Like others have said the Wildman, DP, PHP or any of the other custom chips will have better performance than the "blanket" programs like the Edge and various products.

The DP does have slightly more power due to being custom. I haven't seen a huge mileage increase/difference between the 2 though. HOWEVER, the shifting and drivability is greatly improved with the DP as compared to the Edge. For that in and of itself, it was worth it to get a custom chip.

The only downside to getting a DP, TW, BTS, or similar chip is that you've got to have separate gauges.

My thoughts on any Edge product for the Powerstroke -->
Go with DP Tuner, a TW Tuner, or a PHP tuner... can't go wrong with any of those 3. I couldn't be happier with my DP tuner.

I myself vote for the DP and with Clay's sale he has going on this month now is the time to buy if you were on the fence. I just fell off the fence last friday and I love mine. So guys tell me when does the milage improve after a dp install? I had to be careful the other night looked down and doing 55 in a 40. No one warned me this thing could cause the red and blues to come on and have a converstation with the police. Thank god he was on a donut break when I went by.

Sorry for the and the

don't waste your money on a Edge. go with PowerHungry if you like the guage combo or Get a tune from Tony or DP. Spend your money once. Barney

I have the edge evolution and the ez. together they did not give me the performance of the dp. My mileage and drivability went up with the dp. Check Clay's sale and you might be on your way to gauges for not much more than you will pay for the edge.

If you get the Edge, don't line up to a truck with the DP-TUNER, you will loose every time.
