Need some schoolin' please ...

I'm in the used car (buying) market. Can anyone tell me what the reasons might be that a 3 year-old (`06 Fusion) with 51,000 miles would fail an emissions inspection?

My guesses are: Bad O2 Sensor? Clogged Air filter? The guy never changed his oil?

What am I missing here?

check the computer for trouble codes.

My guess is codes also. Is the check engine light on. In ILL you fail instantly if the light is on.

If you could get a copy of the inspection and then take that to a competent mechanic they should give you a good idea. That is IF it is not just a CEL, and actually high levels of something.

I agree with the other poster. You first need to have it scanned and get the trouble code. No reason to guess what it may or may not be and what the repair cost will be until the OBD11 system is checked out. I would not buy a used car if the seller didnt have it able to pass inspection,unless hes selling it real real cheap.Dont forget even if the ECM is reset and the CEL goes out it will come back on after the car is driven long enough for the computer to go back and detect the fault again . Something for sure is not kosher or the CEL wouldnt be on.
