My truck is a F 250 HD with a 460 7.5 motor. I was thinking about getting a K & N air filter. Would this just be a waste of money ? I was thinking of getting it to see if i would get any better gas miles from it.
K&N and the like will allow more dirt through. They even admit it on their web site
if you know what to look for, can be as much as 4x what a paper filter lets through.
They do flow more air, but milage gain will be very small.
Guess it depends on how long you keep your vehicles, if not for long then K&N
wont matter (maybe). Keep them and want them to last, then a paper filter
would be a better choice.
K&N can destroy a turbo (if you had one) with the dirt they let through.
Just today, I installed the K&N off-road filter on my 1997 F250 5.8L. I've had it for a while but just now got around to doing the install. The engine sounds much more aggressive and I too hope to improve my mpg and performance. I'm currently getting 14 mpg but think I can get more. I'll let you know if there are any improvements.
In normal driving conditions, a K&N will do fine. If you find that you spend a lot of your time in a dust cloud on a dirt or white rock road, you should look into the prefilter for your conestyle K&N filter. If you are just looking at a drop in, lots of dust = paper style filter. When looking into the oiled filters, read the actual research, because everyone has a different opinion on here. I personally love K&N and have a 99 Tahoe in the family that I have run a F.I.P.K. on for most of it's 150K life with no ill effects. The MAF is clean as can be, but then again I don't over oil it like some of the idiots that like to bitch about sensor contamination.

I wish the people here that buy a/m filters for more flow for their diesel engine would read the research and find out that they don't need it for that in the first place unless they extensively modify their truck.
I've got a K&N drop-in in my truck, and when inspecting the intake tract after a few months of driving, there is zero noticeable traces of dust/dirt/particles in my intake, and there is no noticeable difference in filtration between the K&N and stock filter. I do drive on the beach where it can be very dusty if it hasn't rained for a few days, and into sand pits where it can be even worse.
Well im only going to put about 1500 to 2000 miles on this truck a year since i only drive it in the summer, and i dont drive in any real dirty areas.
I just work with a guy that says to get one if for anything it will give me more power.
Im not real sure so i thought iwould ask the experts here. I might just keep the one in it thats stock.

Mine's a 5.4 gasser, and requires extensive modification to acheive acceptable power. I wouldnt put one on a diesel if I had one, unless it was part of a reputable performance package and tuned for it.

Not even then would it be a good idea to do it. It won't flow more air then stock until your way outside your powerband(beyond the practical need for it) and tuning alone won't get you there. We are talking injectors and turbos need to be swaped, something that 90% of the a/m intake owning population didn't have done.
6.0s and 6.4s don't need it til you've done extensive mods. Gassers are a different story. I've actually heard good things with the K&N for gassers, it just doesn't go for diesels, in fact, the opposite is true for those filters.

Isn't the case in point here a gasser? The OP said his truck was a 460 CI, not a diesel.
