93 f 150. However it happened, my 8.8 exploded on me yesterday. Ring and pinion gears are both banged up pretty bad. The carrier took most of the damage, which of course damaged about everything else inside. My options right now are to 1. find an entire assembly (housing, gears, etc.) at a junk yard and just swap them out. 2. just pull the carrier and ring and pinion out of the junk yard axle and replace in my housing. 3. somehow order a brand new carrier with ring and pinion. I havent priced that one yet. These options assume that my axle shafts are still good.
Anyone have any ideas about the best way to go is??
The best is not usually the cheapest, and this isn't an exception.
Best: Take it to a shop and have them see if the housing is still good and then re-build the whole axle. You might as well get a whole new rebuild for what it will cost just to set up a new ring & pinon on a new carrier in the axle.
Cheapest: Buy a juinkyard axle, try to pick that isn't too worn out (most are), install it, and cross your fingers.
Do both. Go grab one out of a jy to get you by, but don't trust it for the long haul. While you're driving the donor take yours to a shop and see what they say.
