HELP tans fiter replacement

I have been turning my own wrenches for years and have never had any issues with basic maintenance.....BUT today I dropped the trans pan to replace the filter on my 2004 Expedition and when I did this small beige dradel looking thing was sitting in the bottom of the pan. It is round and has a black grommet on it. Everything else looked fine. anyone know where this goes?

What you are seeing is likely the plug for where the dipstick tube installed. It is not unusual to find one of these the first time the pan is dropped. Pitch it.

Craig is correct, just means the pan was never dropped.

When the transmission is installed there is a plug in the hole where the dipstick goes. When the dipstick is installed the plug gets pushed into the transmission pan. If you didn't find this plug in the pan it was probably previously removed.

Thanks all got everything back together and after figuring out the plug was needless,I was happy. She runs great now.

On another note......

When I did drop the pan the magnet that is in there was covered in shards of metal. I have dropped many an oil and trans pan but do not recall seeing so much metal. My truck does have 130K on it and runs like I just bought it so I was a little taken by the amount that was in the pan.

Opinions???

When you say "shards" do you mean ⅛", ¼" or larger? If it looks like iron filings then there is probably nothing to worry about. But if there are pieces of metal I'd keep an eye on things. 130k and the pan had never been dropped. How did the fluid get changed before?

Yes it would be filings. As for the pan never being dropped I bought this used a year or so ago. The place I got it said they had done all the routine stuff when they sold it to me....LIARS. No big deal the fluid looked good and smelled fine. No burning smell or black sludge. I replaced the pan fluid with Mobil1 Syn Trans fluid. I hope this stuff works as well as they say it does.
