[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Aug-02 AT 03:51 PM (EST)]I have a 92 Ford Explorer, and it keeps on tearing up torque converters. It is now going out again and this will be the 5th one in the past year. Luckly, I've had it under warranty so far but the warranty is almost up. Ford has been unable to figure out what is wrong with it. Pretty much all they do is say, "oh, it needs a new tranny, let's stick a new one in" and don't look to see what caused it. Last time they replaced the flywheel and the spacer between the flywheel and the motor thinking that the torque converter wansn't staying striaght. That didn't help because it is still tearing up converters. It also has never shifted right from the 3rd to 4th gear. It has always shifted too early and the rpm goes too low, although it has never killed the engine. While driving around 45- 55 it will shift back and forth between those two gears. Hopefully, I am not the only one to have gone through this. Help!

have you checked fluid pressure??Sounds like you might have a fluid pressure problem in the converter. And are you buying all your converters from the same manufacturer??JMO.As for the shifting problems it could be a weak spring in the valve body.
