Hi i am having a problem with my 97 F150 4.6L. it will idle fine then when i push the gas it lags then revs up or it bogs right out and when i drive it it is lacking its usual power. sometimes the check engine light will come on and it pumps out black exaust like it is over fueling. i have changed the fuel pump, the egr , the TPS sensor the fuel filter various vacum type sensors and still no improvment. oh and i have also changed the computer and that did not fix it either. i am thinking it is either the cats or the knock sensor i have a rough sketch from for but i was wondering if anybody knows how to get at it
I have doubts that its the knock sensor,First, check the code(s) in the computer...if your showing high miles on the odometer,Id be looking at O2 sensors. If its like my 4.2,it will have 2 upstream, and 2 downstream. the upstream ones(usually on the exhaust manifolds) control the computer..the downstreams tell the computer if the converters are doing their job.Downstreams will be behind the converters.....
Next you probably need to look into the throttle body, and see if its excessively grungy. If so,I suggest removing it and giving it a good celaning. The converters could be damaged(especially in rich mixture conditions)...I replaced mine with a set from bearriver converters(sponsor).
If you do elect to remove and clean the throttle body, get a new T/B gasket prior to removing it,and keep the cleaner(caustic) away from plastic parts such as Throttle Position Sensor.
Hope this points you in a good direction....BTW welcome to our world.
i hooked my friends Mac taskmaster up to the truck when the engine light was on and it said to check the cable and grounds cause it could not connect so i did a quick check no grounds seemed to be out of place (tightened them anyways) and went back to it nothing so i removed the battery cables and turned on the lights to clear the memory and i could connect so i went in and viewed the live data and all of a sudden the engine light came back on and suddenly no live data was being received everything zeroed out so im thinking the ecm is done and i dont know ill have to ask a Ford tech if the computer is supposed to be getting warm
