Over the last few months i have put three, brand new starters on my truck. Not rebuilt, new Ford starters. I just had another one go bad. I get it replaced for nothing as the starter has a good warranty but this is getting old. any ideas what mught be causing this. I had an FICM put on three weeks ago when my alternator went out....Hope its just bad starters and ill get a good one...
When you start it up it turns over fine...Then right before it fires it start skipping..sputtering..sometimes once, sometimes twice...sometimes not at all...I took it to ford and they said the starter was bad...other than that it runs fine..Just seems odd that starter, alternator and ficm have all died in the last month or so....

When you say skipping , sputtering, does it sound like an electric motor free running? or is it a chattering, like a machine gun. If it's machine gunning then it's a power delivery/ low voltage problem, check the batteries, cable coonnections and grounds on the engine, I had one truck where the dealer forgot to hook up the ground cable to the lower starter bolt and the truck was starting on one battery. If it's free running, then It's a bad starter.
I put a new starter on it tonight so hopefully that will fix it. It sounds like the old carb engines that were flooding out as you would try to start it. If that helps. Ill check the grounds again tomorrow to make sure they are all tight...besides the battery ones are ther any others i should look at...
These batteries are two months old. i losr by alternator about a month ago which caused the other issues...now i have a new alternator, ficm, starter and two batteries and it still does it...Im at a loss now..
So what you are saying you have to hold the starter on until the engine fires on all 8 and if you let off it chugs on a couple cylinders and dies? If so that sounds like a bad ficm which will give you hard starting when cold. If it only does it when warm then the stc fitting may be bad. No reason to be burning out so many (if any) starters.
Is it an 04? If so i wonder if you have wire chaffing issues?
Did the alt. go out after the batteries were replaced...if so I wouldnt be too sure that those batteries are good. I have seen several times that when the alt. goes it takes the batteries with it. Usually this happens soon after battery replacement or after a alternator replacemnt. I would say start with the basics and get those batteries checked. Most auto parts stores ill checkem for free...if thats not it then take it back to ford cause you have another issue which is probably related to the repairs they just did.
I agree that this is something much easier diagnosed in person..are you able to post a link to a video or sound bite say on youtube or something like that.
I had to leave town for work for a few days so i decided to drop it off at the Ford dealer to see if they can figure it out. hope they can and ill keep you guys posted. the sound sounds exactly like a bad FICM but they tested it and it was ok...
Well i got the truck back today from the Ford Dealer and these guys have temporarly improved my feeling about dealers. it turns out that the previous owner had tried to install a remote start and did not know what they were doing. All kinds of wires tapped into the wrong sources, burnt wires, shorts......you name it. the ford dealer saved all of the wires they pulled from the truck that were bad or bunt up and it almost filled a five gallon bucket. they spent three days on it and ended up charging me $285.00 for labor and 17 new wires. Not bad considring a new starter was about the same price. Now she starts up like she should and some things even work now that didnt before....Ever in North Carolina and need a good shop that is reasonable, the try Crossroads Ford in kernersville....
