ford 9 inch question about axle

Hi everyone , It's been awhile since I have been on here and things are moving along slow but sure . Anyway I scored a 9 inch rear from a 1968 F100 with 3.25 gears . I noticed the axles have a hole in the flange approx . where the bolts will need to go when they down size them to the 4.5 in bolt pattern to match the front hubs on the 5th ave suspension swap that was installed . My question is does anyone have a suggestion as how to repair this area for a redrill without losing strength in the flange ?

I'm guessing that is the hole you use to get a socket and extension through to remove the axle retainer nuts.
I think you want to leave it.
Is'nt there enough room closer to the original stud holes to locate the new holes?

Hi , Yes it's the hole for the socket like you mentioned and I'm not sure that it will anything that might give me a problem . If there will be enough material left around the hole after the area is redrilled that is perfect but my concern was if this needs to be filled in what was the solution that everyone is using ? As far as the hole being left there for the socket, the guy that is helping me on this project says that we can use a wrench to get at the bolts if needed . And considering that he builds pulling tractors for the pro circut and has used a wrench to get to these bolts in the past when needed it shouldn't be a problem . Any thoughts ? Thanks

you can always weld the hole up before maching it. it is steel so it welds real nice.

better way is to weld up the old holes and redrill leaving the socket hole. most of the time they have to remachine the axle face anyways as the truck spiggot is too large for car rims centers, so they can reface the flanges after welding.

your machine shop should be able to do this pretty easily.

I had my axles re-drilled for the 4.5" bc and had no problem with the access hole. It has seen some tuff (read stupid) things done to it over the last 18 years and never a problem. Just find a competent machine shop to drill your new bolt pattern.
