My Emission indicator light came on a couple of days ago. My truck is a '06 PSD F-350 4x4 with 27K miles on it. I generally run Diesel Kleen with every tank.
I've tried unplugging the EGR which doesn't seem to make any difference in the light or how the truck is running. The mileage seems a little lower than normal in city driving recently, but otherwise, the truck seems fine.
I've done some searches, but can't seem to find something comprehensive. Yea, I know I could take it into the dealer, but what's the fun in that?
Any guesses, and does unplugging the EGR rule it out? What else can I reasonably check?
Well, if you're looking for fun (in all the wrong places I might add) you could get someone to read the codes. But the EGR is the most likely reason for the check engine light to illuminate it seems. If you want to go exploring, just pull it and see how dirty it is. Personally, as long as I had warranty, I would not touch it myself - it just makes the technician angry.
Unplugging it won't tell you anything certain. Doing that might trigger the exact same code as a failed EGR valve. P0401, low EGR flow.
As I said, my mileage was worse than normal. Anyway, I went on a bout 1 hour trip each way this weekend after about 15 miles, the mpg jumped and stay there. I'm not sure if the change back to my normal b5 helped, or if switching back to Diesel Kleen helped, or was it just a little bit longer drive? I'm thinking it was some combination because I drove about the same distance without the Diesel Kleen and B5, and it didn't seem to help. I believe the extra drive cleaned out the EGR, but I can't say for sure.
In any case, I reset the Light and and my mileage is still good. YMMV.
