Ok, here is the scoop. I have a 97 Jeep TJ. I need to replace the weak Dana 35c Rear End. The 8.8 is the right width and bolt pattern and I have heard that some came with the 4.10 gear ratio. I would like to find one in a junk yard and would like to know what options on an Explorer I should be looking for. What Year? Tranny (auto or 5spd)? Model?
I know to be truly sure I will have to have the VIN verified, but any ideas on which ones to look at in the yard would be GREATLY appreciated.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Sep-02 AT 02:18 AM (EST)]my sport-trac has a 4.10 8.8 OPEN diff - it came with 16" wheels/tires, and i think the taller tires is the reason it has the 4.10's. it's an early '01, 4.0L SOHC, auto tranny, rear leaf spring suspension, massive drum brakes, 5 x 4-1/2" lug pattern. i think it may have an aluminum driveshaft too - THAT would be easy to spot in the junkyard!
i've been told it's most likely 31-spline as well... if so, you may be able to find a trac-loc unit from an f-150. i have heard that the big "pin" in the middle (the one that holds the spider gears) comes in 2 different diameters, FWIW.
